concubine: she, at first, applied for letters of administration: she went many times to the Courts and I went with her always; her title was rejected and I was taken in; directly I was taken in my papers were admitted: I went perhaps 20 times or over: I saw Mr.

A. K. over 10 times: 5 or 6 other times I did not see him. You

did not tell me my sureties were no good or that I must get others.

John William Lee-Jones: Deputy Registrar, Supreme Court: 16 years

in Registry. Mr. Alim Khan was there and I was there the whole time

he was there. There were certain poor cases (Probate and Letters

of Administration) and he would prepare the papers with the

object of relieving the public. Poor people would come into the

reistry: enquiries would be made and if under $500 Mr. A. K. would receive an order to prepare the papers: when the papers were prepared Mr. Alim Khan would receive the cash from the prople and affix the stamps: in each case it was necessary to get

Registrar's or Deputy Registrar's cognizance. I was aware that the

practice was irregular; but they were special cases; in these very

small cases he was allowed to receive the money in advance: I did

not know that he accepted all the money requisite to be paid out

as required. I never gave him any such authority at all. I was away on leave during all this affair.

Cross-examined by Mr. Alim Khan.

Probate work is not part of my duty but I have often done it.

I should always see that the stamp was on before I administered

the oath. The stamps would be fixed and cancelled before the oath.

If I saw a petition taken before myself on which the stamps

were cancelled some days after the oath there must have been some

special reason for such a circumstance. I don't personally

remember any individual case. (I will show you cases).

You did handle cash for the Official Administrator,

(Sd.) J. W. Lee-Jones.
